Both machines worked and toned the most troubled areas on my body—legs, arms, back and abs just to mention a few.

Originally designed as a training tool for cross country skiers, the Concept2 SkiErg® has been embraced by the fitness community for its ability to work legs, core and arms in a smooth, continuous motion. Great for all athletes at all levels—you don’t have to be a skier to reap the benefits of the SkiErg’s total body exercise. With the same flywheel and Performance Monitor as our RowErgs and the BikeErg, the SkiErg offers a quality workout that will build your strength and endurance.
Our SkiErg is easily adapted to those with lower body limitations or injuries and will deliver complete cardiovascular training, working your core and upper body from a seated position, whether from a stool, chair or wheelchair.
Tough and built to last, our machines withstand rigorous use in gyms and homes around the world. And like the RowErg and BikeErg, we make sure our SkiErg is easy to care for so you can focus on using it, not maintaining it.
Whether you’re an elite cross-country skier looking to improve your power, or someone looking for a great workout, the SkiErg will help you achieve your goals.
The Performance Monitor is what sets the Concept2 SkiErg apart from other cross-country training devices: packed with features yet easy to use, it allows you to accurately assess your output, monitor your progress, and compare your scores with others. Each SkiErg comes with our most advanced Performance Monitor, the PM5.
The PM5 monitor has both Bluetooth and ANT+ wireless connectivity, allowing it to connect to many heart rate belts, fitness devices and apps. Our free Concept2 ErgData app helps you track your workouts and can sync with the Concept2 Online Logbook. Third party apps can provide additional features to help keep you motivated.
The SkiErg can be either mounted on a wall or used with a floor stand. Wall mounting provides the most compact option, while the floor stand, with its anti-skid deck and caster wheels, provides an all-in-one solution that makes the SkiErg mobile. Either way, the SkiErg is easy to assemble, and we provide all the tools you’ll need to do the job.
The SkiErg relies on high-strength cords in its drive system. Much stronger than steel, the cords are also extremely lightweight, resulting in a system that is responsive and smooth.
The SkiErg responds to your effort on every pull, so you are in full control of your exertion and resistance at all times. The spiral damper allows you to quickly adjust the airflow to the flywheel, so you can change the feel of the pull to suit your preference. Whether you want your workout to feel like you’re on flat terrain or an uphill climb, the SkiErg will respond to your needs.
The SkiErg’s ergonomic, strapless handles provide for a comfortable, secure grip and won’t absorb sweat so they stay dry in high use settings. They are also suitable for all hand sizes as they require no adjustment. Learn more

The SkiErg is designed for both double-poling—the two-armed pull common to all variations of Nordic skiing—and the alternating arm motion used in Classic Nordic ski technique. The double-pole involves more of the larger muscle groups, resulting in increased aerobic demand, calorie burn, and an overall higher quality workout. The classic alternating arm motion is also a good workout, while using a slightly different and smaller set of muscles.
When using the double-pole technique, each pull engages the arms, shoulders, core and legs in a downwards “crunch,” using body weight to help accelerate the handles. Watch the technique video and you’ll see the legs raising the body weight on each stroke, much as they do when skiing on snow. A workout on the SkiErg provides a true full-body workout that exercises the legs at least as hard as the upper body.
The classic (alternating arms) ski technique uses fewer muscles than double-poling, and generally has less leg involvement, but it is an excellent ski-specific training for Nordic skiers. It may be preferable to use a lower damper setting than is used with double-poling.
The SkiErg is often used by multiple users in an indoor environment where the typical ski pole strap would be cumbersome to adjust between users, and difficult to keep clean. To alleviate this, the SkiErg has strapless grips. The “shelf” at the bottom of the grip rests against the heel of your hand similar to how a strap would transfer the load to your hand. The surface of the grip is covered with the same durable material we use on our rowing oar grips. This material has good grip properties and does not absorb water. If you prefer to train with grips with straps, standard Nordic ski pole grips can be adapted to the SkiErg.
Although Concept2 is best known as a rowing company, quite a few members of the Concept2 family are skiers. Here in northern Vermont, the lakes are frozen for at least half the year, and there's plenty of snow during the winter. Skiing and rowing are two of the most aerobically demanding sports and serve as effective cross-training in opposite seasons. Both sports use the entire body, requiring the heart and lungs to provide oxygen to many muscles of the body at once.
We first started playing with the idea of a SkiErg in 1982, using parts from our Model A Indoor Rower. After years of tinkering, testing and training, we introduced the SkiErg in 2009, and then in 2014, our second generation and current design, was born.
