Getting Started On The SkiErg
The SkiErg is a durable and compact exercise machine that provides a full body workout. This short video shows you all you need to know to get started on the SkiErg. It introduces two common techniques; double poling and alternating arms, how to be most efficient with your pull, as well as how to adjust the damper setting, connect to ErgData and heart rate monitors and explains the metrics on your Performance Monitor (PM5).
Also on this page is more information on SkiErg technique, adaptive alternatives, training plans and workout ideas, maintenance of your SkiErg, and how to get involved in the Concept2 community with ErgData and Logbook challenges.
SkiErg Technique Tips
- Power comes from the core and lats; a slight rise on the toes at the start of the pull is natural.
- Drive the handles downward by beginning momentum crunching at the core and hinging at the hips before following with your arms and bending the knees.
- Tip: Use the same movement pattern as throwing a slam ball towards the ground. Imagine the handles are the ball and drive them down with power starting at your core.
- Think “hat to pocket” - do not extend the handles too far above your head at the start or too far below your waist at the bottom of the drive.
- Seated skiing emphasizes upper-body and core engagement and is an effective option for adaptive athletes and those limiting lower-body involvement.
Flywheel & Damper Settings
The damper adjusts airflow to the flywheel, affecting how the SkiErg feels during each stroke. Damper settings range from 1–10. We recommend a damper setting between 3 and 5 and adjusting based on your preference and training goals as you progress.
The Performance Monitor (PM5)
The PM5 provides real-time feedback to help you track your workouts, monitor your progress and stay consistent. Learn the basics of navigating screens, setting up workouts and understanding your performance data.
