• Arnold Hill School - Race The Sun
  We organise an event called 'Race the Sun' which is the result of a member of our PE department entering the Action Medical Research sponsored event which challenges teams to Run, Canoe and Cycle as far as they can during the hours of daylight.
• Megan Jephcote
  In October 2008 Megan joined the Ross Rowing Junior Academy. She enjoyed the on-water training and took part in the the Welsh National Indoor Rowing Championships in December 2008. Megan very much enjoyed the event and was lucky enough to come away with a bronze medal.
• NE Essex PCT - Report On Rowers In Schools
  This report provides an evaluation of the Rowers in Schools project a year after it began in nineteen secondary schools in North East Essex in February 2009. The project contributes to the engagement of schools in addressing obesity and physical activity levels, which is vital for improving the health and wellbeing of young people in the area.
• North East Schools Travel to NJIRC
  On Tuesday this week indoor rowers from the North East travelled to London to take part in the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships (NJIRC).
• East Midlands Schools Indoor Rowing Championship
  On Friday 26th February 2010, Competition Managers from the East Midlands region, with support from Concept 2, ran the first ever East Midlands Regional Schools Indoor Rowing Championship. The event focused on both a Key Stage 3 and a Key Stage 4 competition, with the competition format ensuring that both girls and boys were targeted by schools from across the region.
• How One Competition Manager Has Rolled Out Indoor Rowing Across One SSP.
  This is a breakdown of how Kim Lillie, Competition Manager for Leicester-Shire & Rutland, covering South Charnwood, Melton & Belvoir and Rutland SSPs has overcome a few hurdles in order to roll out indoor rowing across one of her SSPs
• NSSW SSP Indoor Rowing Challenge Success
  Monday 29th June to Friday 3rd July was National School Sports Week and was a very busy time for the SSP PDM and Assistant PDM! Following on from the success of last year's programme the SSP took their 10 Concept 2 indoor rowing machines on the road to 18 primary schools in the partnership.
• Oxclose Community School
  The story of rowing at Oxclose Community School started about 3 years ago. I applied for £900 for the community chest fund in Washington and was very surprised to find a cheque for that amount on my desk a short while later. The original idea was to improve our existing fitness facilities which were old and rather well used to put it politely....
• Matty Rayson - Tony Blair Sports Foundation Sports Leader
  Hi I'm Matty Rayson, I'm 13 years old and a Sports Leader from Newcastle who recently helped out at a Rowing Event organised by The Tony Blair Sports Foundation. I was extremely lucky to be a part of this fantastic event and wanted to let everyone know how much fun, enjoyment and satisfaction helping out and volunteering your time can be.
• Portchester School Fundraising for Steve Bernard Foundation
  A major contributory factor in the levels of participation and success that Portchester School in Bournemouth have enjoyed this year has been the support the school have received from the Steve Bernard Foundation.
• Cullercoats Primary School
  As a result of participating in the Primary Specialism Physical Education Pilot, Cullercoats Primary School was loaned five Concept2 Rowing machines for use both club activities and in lesson time. All of the staff took part in a training session to allow non specialist teachers to use them in an efficient manner. This motivated the staff greatly and years 3- 6 have been using them over the two years that we have had them. We now have only one year left with them and we are becoming concerned about the void that they will leave when they a returned.
• Willow Brook Primary School
  In September 2004 Concept 2 staff approached Willow Brook at Keyworth, to run the first ever pilot indoor rowing scheme in a primary school. So how has it worked with the younger children? Well, here's another Nottingham success story - and that includes staff and parents.
• Willow Brook Primary School Curriculum Enrichment Project
  In 2006, Concept 2 was involved in a most successful pilot scheme to bring indoor rowing to primary pupils in four inner city schools in the St.Ann's area of Nottingham. The Concept 2 team spent a day in each school, setting up 12 indoor rowers and the technology to link them to a giant screen showing races in progress. Following the enthusiastic reaction to this event, Concept 2 Education Team have set up a longer-term study at Willow Brook Primary School in Keyworth, Notts.
• Redwood Rows Round The World (Twice!!!!)
  As part of the celebration day events at Redwood on Friday 3rd July students across all key stages were challenged to row around the world on our five Concept2 rowing machines. Students could pop in and out of the challenge as and when they liked and as many times as they wanted. It did not matter if they rowed 1 meter or 1000 meters as they were rowing to the same destinations collectively as one team.
• 5X60 Programme Helps Raise Money For Ysgol Tre-Gib School
  The first School in Wales where a 5x60 Officer has organised a Sponsored Fundraising Event to buy their own Indoor Rowers. When the word gets around others will want to do the same.
• Barnet Rolling Base
  The Rolling Base project in Barnet, north London is a fantastic example of how you can use indoor rowing imaginatively to capture young people's attention and show them that they can get active in some different and exciting ways.
• Manning School Sponsored Row
  During the week of 27th April - 1st May, Manning School Girls took part in a sponsored rowing event to raise money for the charity group 'School Children for Children'.
• Row your boat to tackle obesity
  An innovative pilot scheme between the Tony Blair Sports Foundation and the North East Strategic Health Authority was launched today (30th April) to tackle childhood obesity and other health conditions through rowing.
• North London Rowshows
  Building on the successes of a similar (smaller!) project in 2008, the North London Competition Managers, in association with their SSP's planned a series of 'Rowshows' across the 4 North London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest. The aim was to deliver 10 Rowshows in secondary schools over 2 weeks in each borough. Therefore an 8-week project targeting 40 schools. Each school pupil would be participating in an intra-school competition, leading into a Borough inter-school virtual league competition. The project was to be delivered from Jan to March 2009.
• Heart of Birmingham Teaching PCT
  In 2006 the Heart of Birmingham teaching PCT funded an indoor rowing project into the 117 primary and secondary schools within their catchment area utilising funding from the Choosing Health initiative. The purpose was to introduce a new and exciting phys
• Greater Manchester Indoor Rowing Festival
  On Monday 9th February at the Manchester Velodrome 300 young people from schools representing 10 local boroughs took part in the Greater Manchester Indoor Rowing Festival.
• Berwick Community High School
  Berwick Community High School is a truly comprehensive school in the most northerly town in England. It is the only High school in the town, with Northumberland being a three tier system with two feeder middle Schools

  When young people are introduced to the “Venue Race Software” it provides a real impetus for competition for individuals and teams

  Improved participation rates in extra curricular activities
• Calthorpe Specialist Sports College
  The indoor rowing machines have been used as part of the schools weight loss programme to increase and monitor physical activity. Adults from the local community also use the indoor rowers as part of the healthy lifestyles programme we run during our outreach programme with the wider community
• Competition Managers Indoor Rowing Programme
  A programme targeted at Year 10 pupils that currently did not take up opportunities for competitive sport at school.
• East Beds Schools Championships
  School Competition makes TV news. Ex- pupil of Burgoyne School, Simon Prior, who is planning to row across the Indian Ocean for charity, returns to inspire pupils to take up indoor rowing.
• Yet another use for Indoor Rowing – Study support
  The Pilgrim Centre’s aim is to use sport to motivate pupils aged 9 – 14 who are struggling with their study or who have become disillusioned by traditional learning styles. The centre has developed a healthy living session which incorporates physical exercise linked with ICT applications. We identified Concept2 rowing machines and RowPro software as meeting these needs and delivering a wow factor. “I’d never been on a rowing machine before and it was excellent.” .“The rowing made the exercise fun but tiring.”
• Heart of Birmingham – Indoor Rowing in Primary and Secondary Schools
  The Teaching Primary Care Trust in the Heart of Birmingham area put machines into primary and secondary schools in the Birmingham area with the aim of raising awareness of fitness and tackling obesity with pupils from a young age. The summary of their evaluations can be found here.
• Redwood Secondary School
  Redwood school competed against many other schools at this years English Indoor Rowing Championship in Manchester. “This culminated in us receiving a special award at the closing presentation in recognition of our pupils outstanding effort and performance. We were presented our medal by no less than Anna Bailey - world champion in the events such as 1000k !”
• Newcastle Schools Sport Partnership
  Newcastle Schools Sport Partnership (NSSP*) is supplying students in Newcastle city schools with rowing machines to improve their competitive edge, fitness and interest in the sport. “Students get fit and by competing against each other in their teams, gain respect for the abilities of others and raise their own sporting standards.”
• Sutherland Primary School
  The club offers children, aged 9-11, a structured indoor rowing experience and ‘healthy lifestyle’ coaching. We have had fantastic success with some of our targeted pupils, in particular those pupils identified as ‘over weight’. By introducing them to indoor rowing as part of a balanced programme of ‘healthy living’, we have successfully and significantly improved their ‘wellbeing’.
• Lordswood School
  The Lordswood School in Birmingham have been using their rowing machines to make Maths and ICT lessons more enjoyable and practical for pupils. Maths teachers and PE staff combined parts of their curriculum by using PE time to do fitness testing, which in turn were used in Maths and ICT lessons to understand the Speed, Distance and Time relationship.
• Al-Hijrah Secondary School
  Pupils in the Al-Hijrah Secondary School in Birmingham used the Concept2 rowing machines to do a virtual Hajj row. The lesson resources and online guide gives pupils the opportunity to understand the Hajj, mirror the events of the Hajj and row for equivalent distances. The Hajj is a yearly event and will take place at the start December this year.
• Frankley Community High School
  Frankley Community High School situated on the outskirts of Birmingham is a relatively small school with just under 500 pupils on register ranging from years 7-11. Since the introduction of the Concept2 indoor rowing machines in Nov 2006 the PE DEPT has seen a noticeable positive effect in PE lesson/KS4 girls PE lessons and extra curricular participation levels.
• Effects of a classroom-based program on physical activity and on-task behaviour
  There is little evidence on the positive benefits physical activity can have on improving children's concentration, mental cognition and academic performance. The aim of this study therefore was to examine the effects of a classroom based physical activity program on young children's activity levels and on-task behaviour during academic instruction time.
• St Philip’s: The Introduction of indoor rowing in a school for children with special educational needs.
  St Philip’s is a school for children with moderate learning difficulties (MLD) located in Chessington Surrey. We are a local authority funded school and at the time of writing have 125 students on role. These pupils have in line with similar schools a significant range of needs and performance levels. As part of the school we have a autistic unit and provision for children with severe learning difficulties as well as a 6th form.
• London Youth Rowing Community Projects
  London Youth Rowing is a major sports initiative which brings together the resources of the Federation of London Youth Clubs and the Royal Albert Dock Trust to launch a community based rowing programme, the first such activity with plans to operate across the whole of Greater London.
• Nottingham City Schools IRC
  On Tuesday 23rd January the Nottingham School Sport Partnership held its first City Indoor Rowing Championships for primary school children. The year 6 competition was a huge success and combined tuition on rowing technique and how to use the indoor rower safely with fun games, pairs and team relay races
• Pupils Stick Their Oars In
  They maybe high and dry but a group of Bexley Primary School children have take to rowing in a big way.
• Highfield High School
  Highfield have had two rowers for just a few months and the whole thing has really taken off. There is a group of 20 pupils coming in as early as 7.30am in the morning to row these are pupils that do not take part in clubs or teams.
• Biddenham Upper School
  "We have an ergo room converted from an existing store room. The nine Indoor Rowers are connected to the projector enabling races to take place and times for team and individual to be recorded in Year 9 lessons and the two after school rowing clubs."
• Evesham Rowing Club and Wychavon District Council
  I have followed with interest the success of the Birmingham Schools Indoor Rowing Project, sponsored by the Sir Steve Redgrave Trust. Having had a large contingent from Colmers School at the Evesham Golden Mile over the last couple of years, I am well aware of its impact, and it is great now to see participants in the scheme achieving medals at the British Indoor Rowing Championships.

• Lourdes Secondary School Glasgow - Totally Rowing Project
  The addition of 5 Concept Rowers into the PE department's fitness suit has had a major impact on numerous areas of the pupil's curriculum. From the outset the department knew of the benefits of using rowing machines from a purely fitness point of view and as a lead-in to the actual sport of rowing.
• Wellfield Community School Rowing Project
  "One of the key parts of my job (definitely the most rewarding part) is giving young people opportunities to experience things and do things that they probably would never get a chance to do."
• London Youth Rowing and the Richard House Funny Group
  On Saturday 18th November 2006, The London Youth Rowing Programme hosted an amazing day for the Funny Group, a group of children whose brothers and sisters attend Richard House Children's Hospice. Being a sibling of a child with a life limiting illness is not easy.

• Birmingham Secondary School pupils learn new skills at the Eton Rowing Summer School
• Monmouth Comprehensive School Boat Club's 24hr World Record Row
  "Now their 24 hour charitable exploits on an Indoor Rower has been verified by the Guinness Book of Records. The marathon event in March raised cash for the Boat Club and more than £6,000 for the Charitable Trust set up by five times Olympic gold medalist, Steve Redgrave."
