Rower's Revenge Triathlon

6th October 2002 - Higginson Park Marlowe

The Rowers' Revenge Triathlon, organized by Marlow Rowing Club, took place on the 6th of OCtober amidst excellent weather conditions. The entry of 300 athletes was the largest received in the event's eight year history and shows how popular that the triathlon has become.

Higginson Park was a hive of activity with 50 rowing machines, racking for 300 bikes and finish area crowded with athletes and spectators. Race Director Mike Spencer-Jones said, "It has been a fantastic day, enjoyed by competitor and spectators alike". 40 marshals from the rowing club, plus help from St Johns Ambulance, ensured that the event was smoothly run with no major mishaps (bar a few punctures on the bike ride).

Race winner Philip Mosley, a former Marlow RC member, won the overall event - beating the fastest team by 37 seconds in 1h24m16s. Third overall, 2nd individual and fastest Vet 40 was Christopher Heape from Deal Tri, in 1h25m33s. Chris is taking part in this years Hawaii Ironman triathlon.

The fastest lady on the day with a storming race was Olympian Cath Bishop of Marlow RC, winning the V30 Women's event in 1h36m43s and reducing the category record by 7 minutes in the process. Second lady, and Open women's winner was Caroline Bedingfield from Upper Thames RC in 1h44m15s (Husband Tim was second in the Open men's category).

In the Junior men's event Dan Tipney of Marlow Rowing Club improved by 2 minutes on his time from last year to win in 1h33m13s.

In the Over 60 Men, Ernest Wykes from Cerist Tri in Wales took the title in 1h51m28s, beating Martin Young from sponsors Saddle Safari into second place. Over 50 men's winner, and also the Saddle Safari prize for best record improvement, was Ian Hyslop from Walbrook RC who took over 7minutes off the record to win in 1h34m19, beating 2nd placed John Booth from York by just 30 seconds.

Over 40 ladies winner was Susan Brown from X-Press BC, Cambridge in a time of 1h50m57s.

The fastest Open team on the day were the men from Quintin West 4 in 1h24m53s, while the women's relay team event was won by JET in 1h39m48s.
