2002 Army Indoor Rowing Championship
15th May - Dorney Centre, Windsor
The third annual Army Indoor Rowing Championships, held at the Dorney Rowing Centre, Windsor, attracted a record entry of 195 athletes from across the Army. The event followed the tried and tested format of an individual age-group event over 2000 metres in the morning follwed by a team event in the afternoon, with each athlete rowing an average of 1000 metres.
Familiar faces dominated the individual event. Captain Ollie Cane returned to achieve a third consecutive championship title in the mens event. A time of 6 minutes and 6 seconds, some 3 seconds faster than his times in the previous 2 years, sealed his claim to be the fastest man in the Army, and one of the fastest in the country - a worthy holder of the championship record. Ollie has now moved up to the 30 to 39 age group, but this in no way eclipsed the performance of Major Murray McLeod-Jones, who came second in that age group and overall with an equally blistering time of 6.14. The youngsters in the 19 to 29 age group, led by 2Lt Jackman, followed in 6.24. Staff Sergeant Hinks headed up the 40 to 49 age group for the second year running with a time of 6.35.
The ladies event saw Sergeant Kay Jackson win her second consecutive title in 7.39. This time was slightly slower than 2001, but unlike then she was not being chased for the title in her heat and this year saw off all her competition with ease. A newcomer to the event, Corporal J Lodge, picked up the 30 to 39 age group prize in a time of 8.05.
The team event followed the format of previous years, with four Concept 2 rowers being linked together for each team. With 3 teams rowing at once, and plenty of supporters, this made for an exciting afternoon. The team event was dominated by RMAS Sandhurst. The men of the RMAS Boat Club set a new championship record of 3 minutes 5 seconds - some 5 seconds faster than the 2001 time set by 7 Para RHA. The ladies of Sandhurst, and all from 2 Platoon, Blenheim Company, were 6 seconds ahead of their nearest rivals and some 14 seconds faster than the winning time in 2001, with a time of 3.48.
