MAD Team Charity Record Day

MAD Team Charity Record Day

Post by Graham Benton on 29 Mar 2005, 09:36

As many of you will know, the MAD Team originally developed from a MAD band of hardcore training enthusiasts into it's current form for the 100k World Record Attempt in January of last year. As you know, we were successful in that attempt and more importantly raised nearly £10,000 for the NDCS.

The intention of the MAD Team has always been to keep trying to break records and to keep raising money for charity.

So, time for us to have another go. On 16th April, the MAD Team (pretty much in its entirity) will be descending upon David Lloyd's in Portsmouth. The day is a great opportunity for us all to get together and enjoy each others company, but we are also looking to raise money for a worthy cause once again. The charity we are supporting this time is Cancer Research. Cancer is a disease that has or will affect each and every one of us at some time in our lives - some have already lost loved ones, some people will in the future and some people may be affected personally. We all feel very strongly that this is such a worthy charity and one that we are keen to support as strongly as possible. I hope that you feel the same.

But the day is not just about enjoying each others company, there is work to be done and we are going to have a bash at a few records - 4 in 1 day to be precise. Firstly, we are going to attempt to break the men's, women's and mixed 4 person marathon records. And in addition to this, we will be looking to create and set the new 50k relay record. The relay team will be a real mixed bag of MADers including lwts and even maybe some girlies so we are hoping to have some fun setting a standard that will encourage some other teams to stage their own attempts in the future ... possibly at the Coleshill event in the summer. But remember, each of these attempts still represents between 2 and 3 hours rowing for everyone concerned so are worthy of your support.

Once again, we have set up a JustGiving page so I would encoruage you all to please visit it and show your support for our very worthy cause.

http://www.justgiving.com/madweekend

If you have any questions, please post them here or speak to anyone from the MAD team.

Thanks in advance for your support.

You'll see if you look into some of the MAD team's training diaries on here that we've been taking this seriously and training hard. We've been rowing selection sessions for the marathons, which this month has been 4 x 2k with 4min rest (as the marathons are essentially 2k reps, though with much longer rests).

I'm sure we'd welcome spectators down on the day if people are about, but will defer to GB as to whether David Lloyd will let them in?

I'm pretty sure that David Lloyd would be fine with it - might need to warn them if hundreds of people want to come along but given that it will probably only be a few then can't see a problem with it.

Forgot to mention that we're all out on the beers in the evening too.

No, you'll all be working hard so the guiness will be on me.

Cheers Matt.

All MAD members are professional athletes so that inhibits me from buying you any drinks you see.
And such is my goodwill I would be feel that it is in your vested interest that I partake in the consumption of what you would have otherwise drank!

Is Pompey a good place to go out in?

It's not brilliant but has it's moments - I'm sure that with around 30 of us out it, we will manage to keep ourselves entertained.

The majority of the MADers are booked into the Holiday Inn Express which is at Gunwharf Quays which will be the venue for the evening debauchery - literally stumbling distance from Tiger Tiger, restaurants, bars, etc and right next door to the casino.

Which reminds me - we need a few more MADers to join the casino. Late drink, gamble gamble and they do a great all night breakfast. I have forms or can probably join online. Grosvenor Casino if you want to have a look.

Hey Big Fella
I may be in the country on the 16th and would love to meet up. It's still very much up in the air but there's a stronger than 50% chance I will be in the UK from April 9th through 17th

From the Ryde/Portsmouth catamaran which is next to HMS Victory how far would I have to go?

Hope all is well and you are staying dry.
Will be heading up to Universal next week so I'll give my regards to the Hulk for you.
